Interior Paint Colors: Cool & Warm Tones

Color is more than what we can see with our eyes. Happy, sad, antsy, calm; the colors that surround us in our environment help create and influence our mood. Simply put, color makes us feel. The color and tone choices we make when we think about interior painting have enormous power to influence how we live, work, play and feel in our homes everyday.

Think about your home and how you want to feel there. Are you looking for a relaxing respite from the world in your master bedroom? Do you need a home office that revs you up and fills you with creativity? Here are a few tips to help you select the colors that will get you there!

Cool tones, warm tones. What does it all mean? Design talk, color theory and the color wheel can be a little tough at first, especially if you aren’t used to thinking about color in that way. But it’s easy enough to get through! The color wheel is divided into two sides: one half is warm and the other half cool colors.

Cool Tones

Cool tones are the blues and greens; this color palette includes the deep navies and royal blues, saturated emeralds and teals, lavenders and eggplants, and even silvers and greys. Interior designers use cool tones when they want to create a space that is calm and quiet; an oasis of serenity for a homeowner. Drawing from the palette of cools sets a tone in a room that is restful and relaxed. Strategically applied, professionally painted cool tones can also help smaller rooms feel larger. Colors from the cool side of the color wheel trick the eye and appear to be receding, or moving away resulting in the appearance of a bigger space.

Warm Tones

Warm Tones on the other hand, are the rich reds, rusty oranges and lively yellows. This side of the color wheel gives us spicier, more vivacious colors. Using warm colors and tones can create a more intimate feel in a room. Strategic use of a lusty red shade can make a conversation area in a very large living room feel close and inviting. Layering different but similar warm shades can help create a master bedroom that draws you into its cozy embrace, making a space that might otherwise feel too big, feel just right.

Be careful here though, too much of these strong colors can be too much! I’ve seen designers choose palettes that blend just a pop of the warm in with a cool palette to create a balance in a room. Starting with a warm color on the walls as your base, perhaps a subdued yellow, you can easily add more intense reds and oranges as accent walls or accessories without feeling overpowered.

Colors on the warm side of the wheel also inject spaces with energy and pep. We remodeled our offices at MB Jessee HQ a couple of years ago and chose a palette of vibrant oranges and sage greens. It makes for a space for us that is creative and energetic, perfect for our busy office!

Once you understand the basics of the warm/cool color wheel, it can be easier – and more fun! – to start pairing colors together. If you’re drawn to cool greys and silvers, take a peek at the other side of the wheel and try pairing it with a pop of orange. Using the orange sparingly lets it be the star against the more simple, cool grey tones. Or if a bold bordeaux speaks to you, try using it on the wall and ceiling only and use it with similar shades that also have a bit of grey mixed into, to keep it calm but still exciting.

Colors bring emotion to our lives. Find the ones that speak to you and enhance your living space.

Customer Reviews

“In all the years I've worked with MB Jessee, I'm always so impressed by your crews. They are so respectful of everything--you never even know they're there! Except that the paint looks amazing when they're gone. We've had one showing of our home and already have an offer. I'm sure it is because the paint looks so beautiful.”

“I had my wooden kitchen cabinets painted white. Anabal and Danielle were doing the job. I have nothing but praise for them. They came on time, cleaned up every day, were respective, friendly and helpful. If the rest of Jessee's crew are as great as Anabal and Danielle, this company will go far.”

“Richard and crew have been great, for sure. As much as I look forward to having the job done and my house back in order, I really enjoyed having them around. You should feel really good about how they represent your company.”

— Jessica Dodson

“Thank you for the support you have given the Women's Cancer Resource Center over the past year!”

— Margo - Director Women's Cancer Resource Center

“The kitchen looks NEW! You guys are amazing.”

“I just wanted to send you an email to say that John did such a great job over here today. He is truly a hard worker. He has the perfect balance of friendliness, honesty, and professionalism. I trust him. He takes the time to do the job to the best of his ability and that is what sets him (and your company) apart from the competition. He didn't make me feel rushed. He really made me feel like our job was the most important thing in the world. Thanks again!”

“Matt, Julie & Ricardo, I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank the three of you for the wonderful job you did in hosting the SFBA NARI Chapter Meeting on Wednesday evening. Everything was perfect from beginning to end. Members and guests alike walked away with a truly positive experience. The "painter for a day" and the cookies in the paint cans were an absolute brilliant touch and received rave reviews. What a wonderful way to do such positive marketing. Thanks again for a truly memorable experience for our members and guests. You are valued as a NARI member.”

— Judy Tufo, SFBA NARI Executive Director

“The painters at MB Jesse are top notch! Cesar's team was super friendly and helpful. They were very polite and accommodating. Their expertise in everything painting related was evident in their attention to detail and efficiency painting tricky spaces. The apartment looks brand new!”

— Adam Swisher

“M.B. Jessee painted the exterior of my Spanish house over 9 years ago, and they did such an incredible job that they are still getting referrals from me today. The paint is holding up perfectly -- there is absolutely no peeling chipping or any other deterioration. I still remember that my final walk-through list consisted of items written on one side of a 3x5 index card (and I'm REAL picky about my house!) However, when Matt and I did that walk-through over HALF the items were no longer an issue, as his team had noticed them first and they had already been resolved.”

— JoAnn Newcomb

“Awesome work by highly experienced, professional painters. They were: Conscious about the amount of time it would take. Ours had a lot of pre-work and took 3 weeks. Accommodating when we added a few last-minute changes Understanding when a heatwave hit and we remove some of the plastic sheeting over windows, which they had to put back up the next day. Accessible, especially the on-site crew (Hi Jose & Victor!) -- always answering questions and checking in. The end result is a perfect paint job that makes our 94-year-old house look brand new. I would definitely hire MBJ again”

“The finish on my kitchen cabinets had failed, becoming tacky and grimy around the handles. M B Jessee gave me a reasonable quote, far below some others, and did an outstanding job, striping the original varnish and refinishing with a new lacquer finish. The cabinets look like new. Work was done 1 day faster than estimated. The crew was extremely hard-working, considerate, and neat. Highly recommend M B Jessee.”

“Our paint crew did a great job and the foreman, Gersson was exceptionally great to work with. He was always available to answer questions, good at problem-solving, very patient, kind, and highly professional with great customer service. We definitely recommend this company, and Gersson and his crew.”
