What Should You Look for in Your Painting Warranty?
As you compare painting contractors, it’s essential to take a close look at the warranty they offer for their work.
In fact, we recommend a close inspection of the “bookends” of your project.
What we mean is, first review their proposal and detailed plan for surface preparation (more on that in this article), and then also review their warranty. Both will tell you volumes about their work practices, standards, and the value you can expect.
Is a Longer Warranty Always Better?
It can certainly be attractive, but a longer warranty isn’t always better. In fact, it can be a red flag.
Less scrupulous painters sometimes offer incredible, lengthy guarantees to lure customers in, but really have no intention of following through. Or, they weave fine print into the cryptic verbiage, shielding themselves from accountability.
5 Must-Haves for Your Painter’s Warranty and Reputation
Here’s what to look for:
Clear, concise language. You should know exactly what’s covered, and what isn’t. For example, will your warranty cover labor and materials, or just one or the other?
Reasonable coverage. Here at MB Jessee Painting, we offer a 3-year warranty on both labor and materials. Consequential or incidental damages aren’t covered (things outside of our control), but we clearly lay out what we DO cover and how we stand by our work.
A clear proposal. As mentioned before, the warranty is built on the initial stages of your project being completed correctly. You MUST have confidence that your painter is repairing and prepping the surfaces well, ensuring that your project is set up for success.
Local longevity. Has your painter been in business for a while? Do they have a positive local reputation? If so, you can enjoy a greater measure of confidence in the fact that their warranty is ironclad, and that they’ll be committed to your satisfaction.
Check reviews! While the occasional poor review is inevitable, the rating should be positive overall. This will tell you a lot about the company’s local reputation and quality.
