Painting a Tudor Style Home in Oakland, CA

Iconic, soaring gables, exposed timber framing, contrast of light and dark elements… This 1907 Oakland home is a gorgeous example of the Tudor style, and points to a bygone era in our local architecture. While many classic Tudors are a blend of brick and timber, especially further south, this one was built with stucco instead.
All in all, a gorgeous property, and we were thrilled to be trusted with the repaint.
Our team is a perfect fit for this type of project. On one hand we have extensive experience painting historic properties in the San Francisco area, both residential and commercial (click over to this local landmark as an example).
We also have an in-house carpentry team. This simplifies the wood repair process since we don’t need to outsource, helping us guarantee the kind of quality control and consistency that we’re known for.
Choosing paint colors for a Tudor home
We kept these guiding principles in mind:
Keep it simple. If you trace the history of this style of home all the way back to England, the classic color schemes are very simple and rely on contrast. Dark timber, light body color, and then natural elements like brick or stone play a supporting role.
Maximize the architecture. Embrace the color contrast, and don’t try to modernize by washing out the palette. The details matter and need to be accentuated.
Leverage window color. It can be subtle, or even painted to match the body, but original wood windows leave room for extra style. If you look closely you’ll see the striking color around the window perimeter in the photos below.
Before and after: classic colors for a Tudor house
We absolutely love how this turned out! And don’t miss the porch; talk about a drastic transformation.
