(Part 1) HOA Painting Spotlight: Restoring San Francisco’s Historic Park Hill Condominiums
Every painting project deserves care and attention to detail. But some, like this one, come with a little extra history.
We’re proud to share that MB Jessee Painting has been selected for a full-scale repaint and restoration of the Park Hill Condominiums, one of San Francisco’s most iconic and historic residential buildings.
And yes, if you’re a movie buff, this place might just look familiar. It made a cameo in Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo back in the day. But it’s what’s happening now that has our team even more excited.
A Quick Look At Park Hill’s History in San Francisco
Originally constructed in 1926, Park Hill began its life as St. Joseph’s Hospital, serving the San Francisco community for decades before being converted into condominiums in the 1980s. Its Spanish Revival architecture, striking towers, and hillside views make it a standout in the Buena Vista neighborhood.
Park Hall Condominiums Today
Perched above San Francisco’s Buena Vista Park, Park Hill is striking in every sense: architecturally rich, historically significant, and on the verge of turning 100 years old.
With that milestone approaching, the homeowners association made the decision to invest in a comprehensive restoration. MB Jessee Painting was chosen from a group of highly qualified commercial painting companies, and not just because of our pricing.
We submitted a detailed, all-inclusive bid package that checked every box:
Extensive insurance and qualification requirements
Longstanding vendor relationships
Logistical planning for multi-phase containment and access
Built-in efficiencies to protect project timelines and budgets
What Makes This Historic HOA Painting Project So Unique?
Far beyond a standard repaint, this is a multi-month, highly coordinated restoration that brings together nearly every strength of our commercial painting team.
At a glance:
Over 750 original wood windows, each getting a full restoration (not just paint)
Miles of scaffolding and new netting to contain and protect the site
Specialty waterproofing and concrete coatings from Sika
Color-matched finishes using fade-resistant Sherwin-Williams Emerald paint
Careful prep and protection for decorative medallions and architectural features
We’ll be completing the project section by section, finishing each zone 100% before moving scaffolding to the next. That helps maintain clean, organized progress while minimizing disruption for residents.
And in true MB Jessee fashion, we’re handling every detail: interior protection of priceless stained glass windows, restoring rusted steel frames, and waxing window channels to ensure long-term functionality.
It May Be a Large-Scale Repaint, But It’s Residential At Heart
These are people’s homes, and we treat them that way. From dust control and daily communication to respectful staging and scheduling, we’re bringing the same care and attention we’d use inside a single-family house… just multiplied by 750 windows and a whole lot of scaffolding.
And this is just the beginning. We’ll be sharing progress throughout the project as we move through each phase, spotlighting some of the specialty techniques, challenges, and transformations along the way.
For now, we’re proud to be underway, and proud to help preserve this historic San Francisco landmark for the next hundred years.
