Painting to Connect Oakland’s History and Its Future

Oakland is a fantastic place to live and work, and we are thankful to be a part of this thriving community! A unique way we have been able to contribute to the neighborhood is by painting the historic Original Kasper’s Hot Dogs, as part of a street art exhibit in Oakland.

A Bit of Background

Kasper Koojoolian began his hot dog business in the late 1920’s, moving to its current location in 1943. The hot dog joint enjoyed many decades of popularity, becoming a local icon and serving presidential candidates, headline bands, A-list actors, and regular folks from around town. Under its third generation of leadership, the restaurant closed for repairs in 2003, and its reopening date is uncertain.

To see some photos of what Kasper's Hot Dogs looked like back in the 1920's, head over to their Wiki page!

After shutting its doors, Kasper’s Hot Dogs began to suffer frequent vandalism, and the owner would have to paint over it himself. And that, as they say, is where the story gets interesting!

A New Movement

A team of Oakland street artists has been organizing a series of eye-catching, attractive murals on local buildings, and they teamed up with Harry, the current owner of Kasper’s, to make his historic business a part of their project. The street artists are known by the monikers Tion, Kufue, Pase, Pengo, Aeros, King 157, Gigs, Bukue One, and Yulia Kalk.

Street art tours are common in this Oakland neighborhood, and now, Kasper’s will be a featured stop!

How MB Jessee got involved

Without lift equipment, the team of artists was limited to painting the areas of a building they could reach. That is, until Matt Jessee, owner of MB Jessee, offered to do a priming coat to help prepare the building for its new art!

Our first contribution was here on the Original Kasper’s Hot Dogs building. The artists requested “Prince Purple” as the background color for their upcoming murals, and MB Jessee was happy to oblige!

“Edy and crew are hard at work. They are doing a great job. Very professional outfit you have. Your crew is a delight. You may use me for a reference!”

— Heidi B

“Awesome work by highly experienced, professional painters. They were: Conscious about the amount of time it would take. Ours had a lot of pre-work and took 3 weeks. Accommodating when we added a few last-minute changes Understanding when a heatwave hit and we remove some of the plastic sheeting over windows, which they had to put back up the next day. Accessible, especially the on-site crew (Hi Jose & Victor!) -- always answering questions and checking in. The end result is a perfect paint job that makes our 94-year-old house look brand new. I would definitely hire MBJ again”

“In all the years I've worked with MB Jessee, I'm always so impressed by your crews. They are so respectful of everything--you never even know they're there! Except that the paint looks amazing when they're gone. We've had one showing of our home and already have an offer. I'm sure it is because the paint looks so beautiful.”

“I want to express my thanks for a job well done. The rooms look great and there is no problem with any marks on the all the trim, floor, carpet, etc. The paint job is lovely. I also want to express my thanks for the level of professionalism the foreman showed in running the job. He was very attentive to any changes I needed to make, was extremely careful in getting the faux paint color and effect correct. Thanks so much for a job well done.”

“Matt, We are very happy with how all of the painting worked out. We were extremely impressed with the quality of the work in the bathroom. I liked working with Victor, he and Marvin were extremely conscientious about doing a great job, not just the minimum. I know the front door took a lot longer than you'd expected. But they did it PERFECTLY. We never thought it could turn out like that! Thanks again for the great work. We'll be calling you again in the future!”
