Popcorn Ceiling Removal - Bay Area Painting Tips

Popcorn Ceiling Removal - Bay Area Painting Tips

There are all kinds of fashion trends from previous decades that we shake our heads at now, from mustard-yellow bathroom tile to rust-orange curtains to paisley-print wallpaper. Some of it is easy to remedy, while other fashion foibles are harder to correct. What about removing acoustic popcorn ceilings… are they a do-it-yourself job, or should you talk to a professional about popcorn ceiling removal?

The actual removal of popcorn ceiling texture is not a difficult job. Simply dampen it with a garden sprayer, let it set for a minute, then scrape it with a putty knife on a pole. No problem, right?

Unfortunately, there are a few reasons this is not as easy as it seems. One reason is the mess; this process makes a sloppy, drippy, spattery mess. If you’re going to tackle this project, make sure you remove or cover all furniture, and cover the floors. Plan to wash the walls also when you’re done, and wear old clothes!

Also, the process doesn’t end with the removal. You may have to do some drywall repair or retaping before the ceiling can be painted. And then, of course, there’s the actual painting, which isn’t easy to do on the ceiling.

A more serious consideration, however, is the possibility that asbestos could be contained in this popcorn ceiling texture. From 1950 to 1980, massive numbers of home ceilings were treated with this texture, and many of them contain asbestos. To deal with this yourself, you will need respirators, protective clothing and special hazardous material disposal bags.

If you want to do the acoustic popcorn ceiling removal yourself, make sure you test it first. You can send a sample to an asbestos testing lab to find out.

If taking on this project sounds like more than a do-it-yourself job, you can find many contractors who perform this kind of task regularly. “I had my wooden kitchen cabinets painted white. Anabal and Danielle were doing the job. I have nothing but praise for them. They came on time, cleaned up every day, were respective, friendly and helpful. If the rest of Jessee's crew are as great as Anabal and Danielle, this company will go far.”

“Charles finished yesterday and did a fantastic job. We really enjoyed meeting Charles and having him in our home. He is a great guy in addition to his attention to detail in his work, the protection of our floors, walls and furnishings, and his overall interaction with us both. I would be pleased to recommend him to any of my clients.”

“Richard and crew have been great, for sure. As much as I look forward to having the job done and my house back in order, I really enjoyed having them around. You should feel really good about how they represent your company.”

“M.B. Jessee painted the exterior of my Spanish house over 9 years ago, and they did such an incredible job that they are still getting referrals from me today. The paint is holding up perfectly -- there is absolutely no peeling chipping or any other deterioration. I still remember that my final walk-through list consisted of items written on one side of a 3x5 index card (and I'm REAL picky about my house!) However, when Matt and I did that walk-through over HALF the items were no longer an issue, as his team had noticed them first and they had already been resolved.”

— JoAnn Newcomb

“Julie, by the way, I have never been so impressed with the service of a painting job before! It was like magical elves came and painted our walls without us having to do a thing! It looks amazing and just wanted to let you know how happy we are. Thanks”

“Matt, Julie & Ricardo, I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank the three of you for the wonderful job you did in hosting the SFBA NARI Chapter Meeting on Wednesday evening. Everything was perfect from beginning to end. Members and guests alike walked away with a truly positive experience. The "painter for a day" and the cookies in the paint cans were an absolute brilliant touch and received rave reviews. What a wonderful way to do such positive marketing. Thanks again for a truly memorable experience for our members and guests. You are valued as a NARI member.”

— Judy Tufo, SFBA NARI Executive Director

“Matt, We are very happy with how all of the painting worked out. We were extremely impressed with the quality of the work in the bathroom. I liked working with Victor, he and Marvin were extremely conscientious about doing a great job, not just the minimum. I know the front door took a lot longer than you'd expected. But they did it PERFECTLY. We never thought it could turn out like that! Thanks again for the great work. We'll be calling you again in the future!”

“Awesome work by highly experienced, professional painters. They were: Conscious about the amount of time it would take. Ours had a lot of pre-work and took 3 weeks. Accommodating when we added a few last-minute changes Understanding when a heatwave hit and we remove some of the plastic sheeting over windows, which they had to put back up the next day. Accessible, especially the on-site crew (Hi Jose & Victor!) -- always answering questions and checking in. The end result is a perfect paint job that makes our 94-year-old house look brand new. I would definitely hire MBJ again”
