Protecting Seven Beautiful Old Doors - Wood Refinishing in the Bay Area
There’s an unfortunate tendency out there in the home improvement world to immediately paint over wood. No questions asked. If it’s old or outdated, paint it.
To be fair, sometimes this is the perfect option. Tired kitchen cabinetry, shelving, trim, and worn out windows, to name just a few examples, can be totally transformed with well-chosen paint. This provides a fast, cost-effective route from “old” to “stylish.”
But, in some cases old is good!
Wood that is steeped in history, marked by craftsmanship, and simply needs a little TLC is an entirely different animal. As a case in point, take a closer look at these beautiful old doors that we recently refinished for a local client.
Bringing Old Doors Back to Life - Removing Paint and Restoring Original Charm
Our mission was clear: bring this aged wood back to life with gentle treatment, maintaining that “old look” that our client loves. Clearly they have an appreciation for older surfaces and craftsmanship!
What did our wood restoration process involve?
- We sanded the surfaces, removing scratches and paint while maintaining the “old look”
- Two coats of polyurethane were then applied to seal and protect the wood for years to come
- The gorgeous, original hinges were cleaned, primed, and painted with a new coat of metallic paint
As you can see in our pictures, the doors have all of their character and charm intact. Bringing modern products into the equation simply enhances and protects them, ensuring that these doors will be appreciated for a long, long time to come.
