What's the Best Kind of Paint to Use in a Child's Bedroom?
Has your child covered their walls with posters from floor to ceiling? Many do! Despite their own version of wallpapering, it doesn't change the fact that it's best to go with a durable paint when it comes to painting kids' rooms. Let's face it, most of their surfaces are guaranteed to take a beating over the years, and when they leave, the walls stay. Choose the right paint, and prepare your walls (and those new, cool colors) for the storm!
Picking the Best Paint Finish for Your Kid's Room
It used to be that a higher sheen (shinier) interior paint was recommended since the finish was harder, and thus more durable. As we discussed in a previous blog (take a look here if you missed it), flat and matte paint can be plenty durable. Formulas have improved and evolved to a point where they're sturdy, easy to touch up, and even wipeable when those little fingerprints start to accumulate.
It also dries quickly and is easy to work with. And, unlike gloss and other finishes, flat and matte paint hides imperfections very well.
Interior Paint That Doesn't Smell
Eco-friendly paint can also be a great option for kids' bedrooms. It's virtually odorless, containing low-to-zero levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These low-VOC interior paint products are ideal, especially if they have any susceptibility to allergies. As an added benefit, eliminating concerns about fumes/odors also means that your kiddos can back into the space even faster (routines are everything).
Chalkboard and Magnet Paint Ideas: a Fresh Twist on Your Kid's Bedroom Design
Lastly, chalkboard paint and magnet paint make an incredibly smart choice for kids' rooms. Put a fresh coat of paint in a fun color scheme on three walls, and leave the fourth wall as a dedicated chalkboard, if you will. It's a nice pop of color, but it also gives them a safe, contained space for all their creative expression (that's a nice way to put it, right?). And beyond doodling, it also proves useful for drawing calendars for events, lists of chores, and school project due dates. It's a win from every angle!
Ready for another cool idea?
Anyone who has a kid knows that their tastes and interests are constantly evolving, and that means the wall decorations in their room are constantly changing and being rearranged, leaving a lot of holes. Magnet paint takes care of that, reducing the need for endless spackling and touch-ups. Posters, calendars, flags, and all sorts of things can simply be magnetized to the wall, instead of driven through with nails.
